Creativity, Built In: Adobe Campus Art
Adobe believes creativity can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, and its own buildings should prove it. Over several years I led a run of permanent art and environmental commissions across Adobe's San Jose and San Francisco headquarters, replacing generic workplace graphics with work rooted in place, local creative talent, and Adobe's own history.
Founders Tower. Much of the program centered on Founders Tower, Adobe's new San Jose tower, which opened in 2023. I owned most of the content for the lobby's LED columns and directed it as part of the Brand Expression team: an ambient "glass" state that shifts color with the time of day, a gallery of static and animated product art, bespoke art commissions, campaign and partnership imagery, and stone textures that give the columns depth, light, and shadow. Walking in, a visitor should feel the space is charged with energy, a place of constant making.
The bridge and the grounds. Outside, I was lead creative director on "Creativity Blooms," Hou de Sousa's tree sculptures growing from the top of the pedestrian bridge, with roots below and programmable light patterns, plus the studio's bench sculptures in the same structure, which form a gateway to the tower. At ground level, local artist Leo Bersamina hand-painted an outdoor mural. Both were completed in 2023. Everything had to complement everything else, so a walk west from Founders Tower across the bridge reads as one experience rather than a series of installations.
The game court. West of the bridge sits the campus game court, where employees play basketball, pickleball, and street soccer. Planes pass overhead on final approach into San Jose International, so we treated it as Adobe's biggest billboard. I commissioned designer Emma Zhang to turn it into a work of art, with a brief that asked for something bold, colorful, playful, and energetic while keeping every court line clear for three sports, avoiding illusion-style art, and holding up to daily play. Her finished design, completed in 2023, places the Adobe "A" at the center of a radiating sun, with energy breaking outward across the court.
San Francisco and San Jose murals. In 2025 the program extended to two more murals. In San Francisco, at 625 Townsend, I found and commissioned local artist Laura Garcia for a 948" × 132" window vinyl answering one question from the brief: how does creativity transform the ordinary into the extraordinary in the context of San Francisco itself? In San Jose, at 345 Park, Zoey Gassner started the project as artist liaison and sourced Oakland studio Floss Editions for column wraps built from Adobe's founding history: the eye, the horse, the radio tower, Venus, PostScript, and the butterfly. I took over creative direction from there through final production. Both were installed by November 2025, each credited "Created by [artist]. Created with Adobe."
Projection concept. One idea stayed on paper. Adobe's internal artists had already created a large body of Firefly imagery, and I wanted to put it on the building itself, either projected from inside onto the windows or applied directly to the glass with flexible LED technology. The pitch was simple: "Our internal Firefly images are the best in the business. Let's celebrate this work and the people who haven't received the credit it deserves." It remained a concept and was never produced.
